Mike Wandler: Transforming the Biggest Machines on Earth
He dropped out of high school to run his family's Wyoming machine shop. Now he's betting on the...
Ruth King was at the 2022 Abundance Summit, listening to Dave Blundin talk about how critical data was about to become. She'd spent more than forty years doing financial analysis for small businesses, and as she listened, one thought arrived with the force of a light bulb: Do you know how much financial data you have?
Financially Fit Business, as she puts it, "was born that weekend."
It's worth pausing on who was having that thought. Ruth went to college with a slide rule. She's a chemical engineer by training who spent decades helping businesses get and stay profitable, wrote bestselling books, and built internet broadcasting networks back when that was close to science fiction.
Her whole life runs on a single stubborn principle: "If you tell me I can't do something, I'm going to find a way to do it. Everything I've done is because somebody said I couldn't do it."
That spirit runs in the family. Her late husband, Bob, was, as she tells it, the first to put video on a cell phone, back in 2001, something people insisted couldn't be done.
Turning her idea into reality took a full year. She had decades of client data, none of it consistent, and her team had to teach an AI to read a small-business financial statement, something no off-the-shelf tool could do.
The deeper she went, the more she found a problem hiding in plain sight: by her research, roughly 80% of small-business financial statements are inaccurate, which means most of the analysis built on them is wrong from the start. The moment she knew her software worked: the AI flagged an error in a statement that she, with all her expertise, had missed. "I was pissed and happy at the same time," she says, pissed she'd missed it, happy the software had caught it.
She's blunt about what made it possible. "I would not be doing what I'm doing today if it weren't for A360. I'd still only be doing consulting." And the deeper shift wasn't the software, it was the scale. Her expertise used to live entirely in her own head, available one client at a time.
Now it doesn't.
"It's not dependent upon me anymore," she says, "which means the world can have it." She jokes that she's become "superfluous."
Her Moonshot is to impact a million businesses. She's candid that she's still working toward it, still crossing what she calls the chasm. But Ruth has spent a lifetime doing the things people said couldn't be done. This is just the latest one.
